Fordite is the accumulated overspray from auto factory paint booths, carefully cut and polished using traditional lapidary techniques. My connection to Fordite dates back to the 1970s, when I was deeply involved with my local rock club in Jackson, Michigan. Back then, rockhounds working in the auto industry salvaged dried layers of car paint from factory paint booths—a practice that began in the late 1960s. The paint, repeatedly baked in curing ovens, hardened into a solid and remarkable material. Known as "Fordite, Chryslerite, Buickite, and Detroit Agate" in those days, Fordite has since become the most cherished and recognized term.
