Fluorescent & UV Reactive Minerals, Funkite & Krptonite
Explore a unique collection of fluorescent minerals, UV reactive stones, Funkite, and phosphorescent materials—each selected and hand-finished to reveal their full visual potential under both natural light and black light.
These pieces come to life under longwave UV (365nm black light) and some under shortwave UV, glowing in vivid colors and patterns that are often invisible in daylight. Specimens are shown both in natural light and under UV to highlight their transformation.
Funkite is a rare fluorescent layered paint material recovered from a historic North Carolina sign and sculpture factory site. The material formed over decades and was later reclaimed from the landfill behind the factory. Each piece is hand-cut and polished to reveal intricate banding and intense UV-reactive color.
This collection also includes fluorescent minerals and phosphorescent materials (pieces that glow after exposure to light). Some materials exhibit immediate fluorescence under UV, while others—like strontium aluminate-based pieces—store light energy and emit a sustained glow in darkness.
Perfect for collectors, artists, and anyone searching for:
- Fluorescent minerals and UV reactive stones
- Funkite cabochons, bead pendants, and specimens
- Black light display pieces
- Glow-in-the-dark (phosphorescent) materials
- One-of-a-kind lapidary art
All pieces are cut and polished by hand in my Portland studio and are completely one of a kind.
Funkite fluoresces under UV light, while related layered paint materials like Fordite do not. If you're looking for Fordite, you can browse that collection here.
