Fordite! Genuine Michigan Material! Specimens, beads, pendants, earrings, and cabochons!
Genuine Fordite Jewelry & Beads – Authentic Detroit Agate from Michigan
Fordite, also known as Detroit Agate, is hardened automotive paint overspray from American auto factories. I hand cut and polish genuine Michigan Fordite into one-of-a-kind beads, pendants, earrings, cabochons, and collector specimens.
If you are searching for real Fordite for sale — not resin imitations or layered craft paint — you are in the right place.
What Is Fordite?
Fordite forms when layers of automotive paint overspray accumulate in factory paint booths and are repeatedly baked during curing cycles. Over time, these hardened paint layers become dense and stone-like, revealing striking color banding when cut and polished.
Originally salvaged in the late 1960s and 1970s by auto workers and rockhounds in Michigan, Fordite has become one of the most recognizable forms of American industrial lapidary material. Though modern manufacturing methods have changed, limited quantities of genuine contemporary Fordite still exist.
Authentic Michigan Fordite – Cut by a Lapidary Since the 1970s
I have worked with Fordite for over four decades. My journey began in the 1970s through my local Michigan rock club, when auto industry workers salvaged hardened layers of baked factory paint from spray booths. Known variously as Fordite, Chryslerite, Buickite, and Detroit Agate, “Fordite” remains the most widely recognized name for this uniquely American material.
Every piece in this collection is cut from authentic automotive overspray sourced from trusted, long-standing dealers whose material I have known for years. I stand firmly behind the authenticity and provenance of every specimen, bead, pendant, earring, and cabochon I create.
Today, many imitations flood the market — resin blends, layered craft paints, and mass-produced composites with no true factory history. Genuine Fordite is hardened, oven-baked automotive paint with documented industrial origin. The difference matters.

The Meaning and Symbolism of Fordite
Beyond its industrial origins, Fordite represents transformation and resilience — beauty born from repeated layers and intense heat. Its vivid colors radiate movement, optimism, and creative energy. Many collectors appreciate its “new car energy,” seeing it as a talisman for innovation, safe travel, and forward motion.
As with all metaphysical perspectives, trust your own intuition and experience.
