1oz Fluorescent Sphalerite Chips Shaker, Horn Silver Mine, Utah, Triboluminescent! Phosphorescent!

This 1oz shaker bottle contains a fascinating mix of fluorescent, phosphorescent, and triboluminescent sphalerite chips and nuggets. I’ve done my best to capture the fluorescent effects with a Convoy long-wave flashlight and my iPhone, then edited the background to show the colors clearly. Keep in mind, the appearance will vary depending on your lighting, but the photos give a solid idea of the colors. In a dark room, you can shake the jar briskly and see little bursts of orange light ricocheting around. Note that, while the mineral is soft and will gradually abrade with heavy shaking, these unique properties persist even as the material wears down.

The rough material for this piece comes from the renowned Horn Silver Mine in Frisco, Utah, a historically significant silver-producing site since the 1870s. This unique sphalerite has a deep grey color with a sparkling, opaque surface that captures light in an intriguing way. Unlike typical sphalerite, it fluoresces a brilliant orange under long-wave ultraviolet (UV) light, and it’s also phosphorescent, continuing to glow after the UV light is removed. Additionally, it’s triboluminescent, emitting bursts of light when struck or abraded.
