DVH Genuine Fordite Focal Bead 53x16x7 (9166)

I hand cut this one of a kind, freeform shaped focal bead out of contemporary fordite from a Ford factory in Kansas City, Missouri! Measurements are in the title in millimeters. Because I first cut Fordite as a kid in the rock club in Michigan back in the 1970's I was originally exposed to ONLY original, American made, genuine Fordite that came from Michigan based car manufacturing plants. Contrary to what I previously believed and told people, I now know that there is actually contemporary Fordite that is being collected and occasionally being made available to cutters, but it still sells for anywhere from 20 cents up to $1 a gram! That's $90 to $453 a pound! There is definitely a niche demand for this stuff. Originally, wise guy rock hounds who worked in the auto industry would collect chunks of dried, layered car paint from the paint sheds at the car factories back in the 1970’s, maybe as far back as the 60's as it was already firmly established as a novelty faux gemstone when I first encountered it in the mid 70's. The paint was overspray that had been baked repeatedly making it relatively hard and solid. It was available at local rock and gem shows as "Fordite, Chryslerite, Buickite or Detroit Agate." Fordite was by far the most common and popular nomenclature and has become the accepted name for all forms of paint overspray. I collected chunks of it here and there and then didn’t see any new material for twenty years. Small amounts of actual vintage rough will come up on eBay, ETSY, or at a local show from some old timers estate collection that's being sold off. As I said above, small amounts of contemporary material is available for a price.
