Fabulous Fakes:  The History of Gemstone Simulants and Synthetics

Synopsis:  Throughout history humans have loved colorful gemstones.  Humans being humans, we have always wanted more gemstones than the earth could provide us.  From the time that the ancient Egyptians learned to make glass they were making and marketing imitation gemstones.  In this lecture Portland lapidary artist David Horste will cover the long and fascinating history of imitation gemstones as well as the appearance of synthetic gemstones in the 20th century phenomenon.  In order to learn how to tell real gemstones from fakes one will need a lot of experience and tools that one can only get from study at somewhere like the Gemological Institute of America.  This lecture won't teach you how to tell real from fake but it will teach you how to appreciate the prettiness of ornamental gems in all their forms!

Pictures show just a sample of the many informative slides you'll see in the powerpoint presentation.  There will be plenty of time for questions and answers after the presentation.  Tell your friends!
