Growing up in a rock club in Michigan gave me a deep appreciation for Petoskey stone, the Michigan state stone. I still have a few pounds of the rough to show for it. Petoskey stone is a fossilized coral from ancient seabeds, a calcium carbonate fossil of Hexagonaria percarinata—approximately 350 million years old. It’s a relatively soft stone, long cherished throughout the Midwest and especially beloved by Michiganders for its history, pattern, and sense of place.

Metaphysically, Petoskey stone carries the attributes often associated with fossils and coral—connection to ancient life, continuity, and deep time. In Love Is in the Earth, Melody suggests that Petoskey stone may stimulate intuitive awareness and emotional insight, supporting the third eye and crown chakras while offering energetic protection and creative encouragement. Whether you resonate with those beliefs or simply appreciate the stone for its beauty and story, it’s hard not to feel a sense of wonder holding something that began as living coral hundreds of millions of years ago.
