DVH Michigan Copper Firebrick Keweenaw Bead Pendant 43x9x8 (2848)

DVH Michigan Copper Firebrick Keweenaw Bead Pendant 43x9x8 (2848)

$ 38.98

Michigan copper firebrick from the Keweenaw Peninsula! I made this one of a kind, custom cut bead from a chunk of copper saturated firebrick that came from a copper smelter in the U.P.  2.5mm drill hole, shiny finish but note that like any real copper or silver, this material will tarnish.  A quick wipe with a polishing cloth brings back the shine!  CHAIN NOT INCLUDED.

The material dates back to the late 1800's and early 1900's. The little white, beige, and grey inclusions are from the firebrick. The copper from these Michigan mines is what wired America for telegraphs, made our pennies, and the wire for the first electric motors! These mines were worked by the native people in that region for thousands of years and the copper was traded all around North America long before the age of European encounter. My family went on a rockhounding trip up there back in the late 70's with the Michigan Gem & Mineral Society. We were able to go into some of the mines.

CHAIN NOT INCLUDED. See my other listings for a variety of chains, as well as more focal beads, custom cut cabochons, cold worked glass, genuine jet mourning beads, and more!
